Return to the roots of the series
Final Fantasy is an enhanced version of the classic RPG. The original game came out in 1987 and gave rise to various sequels across an array of formats. With this version, players get to experience both the core gameplay and new visuals for retro role-playing enjoyment.
Long before the likes of Final Fantasy VII and Final Fantasy XIII, there was the original Final Fantasy. With this re-release, the classic game gets some enhancements that bring it in line with some of the later titles in the long-running series.
Retains the classic gameplay
The core gameplay that made the original a hit remains in this version of Final Fantasy. Assemble a team of four heroes from six classes (fighter, monk, ranger, red mage, white mage, black mage) and embark on a mission to save the world. Confront various evil monsters, wield magic, find weapons, and defeat powerful bosses.
Graphical enhancements
While the gameplay is the same, the graphics have been given a new lick of paint. The basic designs have been enhanced, making the experience overall closer to a 16-bit or even 32-bit release than the original 8-bit version. The worlds of earth, fire, water, and the future look better than ever.
A retro experience
The inevitable fact is that, since its release in 1987, the original Final Fantasy has been improved upon by many other RPGs, most obviously its well-regarded sequels. Even with its enhancements, playing this game will be a distinctly retro experience.
A blast from the past
Players expecting something on a par with later Final Fantasy games might be disappointed by this release. However, for anyone who feels nostalgic about the original or whoever is eager to see where the series began, this version of Final Fantasy has a lot to offer.
